Prerequisites
To be eligible for this assessment, the applicant must show:
- COURSE COST IS £1350 PLUS VAT
- This course is intended for all Masters and any crew responsible for navigation on commercially operating small vessels (<24m)
- It is essential for candidates to have a basic understanding of navigational principles prior to attendance.
- Candidates are recommended to have experience navigating small vessels and hold a level of certification that permits commercial operation in Area Category of Operation 6 or above.
- Students shall verbally confirm on the day that they are fit and well enough to participate in practical excersises.
- Photo ID: A valid government-issued ID (passport or driving license).
- Comfortable clothing; PPE provided where required.
- Catering may be limited; please bring your own refreshments. There are vending machines on site.
Course Content
Course Overview
The Small Ships Navigation and Radar (SSNR) course delivers essential training in safe navigation and watchkeeping for operators of small commercial vessels under 24 metres. This programme combines two MCA-approved components:
- Small Ships Electronic Charting System (Approved) and Bridge Watchkeeping Course – 20 hours delivered over 4 days
- Small Ships Radar and Meteorology Course – 16 hours delivered over 3 days
Together, these courses meet the mandatory minimum standards for the safe operation of Radar, approved Electronic Charting Systems and the correct understanding and application of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 (COLREGs), as amended.
Validity of Certificate
After successfully completing each element, participants will be awarded an MCA-approved certificate confirming their competence in key areas of small vessel navigation and safety.
Entry Requirements
This training is designed for Masters and crew members responsible for navigation on commercially operated small vessels (under 24m).
Candidates should ideally have prior experience navigating small craft and hold a level of certification suitable for commercial operations in Area Category 6 or higher. A basic knowledge of navigational principles is required before attending.
Assessment Methods
The programme consists of the two MCA courses listed above. Assessment is carried out through a blend of written tests, oral questioning and practical simulation observations. An assessment plan will be provided at the start of the course.
Other Costs and Equipment Needed
Course fees cover access to all essential training equipment and materials. Learners must bring their own basic plotting tools, including parallel rulers, a compass, dividers and a calculator.
